ASA Staffing Index: Staffing Employment Eases in February

Staffing employment eased for a third straight week in the week of Feb. 13-19, with the ASA Staffing Index decreasing by 0.9% to a rounded value of 100. Some staffing companies mentioned temporary-to-permanent conversions and seasonal business fluctuations as barriers preventing further growth. Staffing jobs were 4.5% below the same week last year.

New starts in the seventh week of the year decreased by 1.3% from the prior week. About a third of staffing companies (35%) reported gains in new assignments week to week.

“Staffing employment is off to a slower start in 2023 than in 2022, though it remains stronger than at this point in any year before that,” said Tim Hulley, ASA assistant director of research.

The ASA Staffing Index four-week moving average nudged down from the prior week to a rounded value of 101.4, and temporary and contract staffing employment for the four weeks ending Feb. 19 was 3.2% lower than the same period in 2022.

This week will be used in the February monthly employment situation report scheduled to be issued by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics March 10.

Vast Majority of Americans Prefer In-Person Job Interviews vs. Virtual

When interviewing for a new job, Americans overwhelmingly prefer an in-person meeting to a virtual format, according to the latest ASA Workforce Monitor® online survey conducted by The Harris Poll.

In total, 70% of all Americans prefer in-person job interviews, compared with 17% who favor video calls and only 9% who prefer audio-only calls. Men (39%) are more likely to feel the need to get a haircut or change their hairstyle for an interview than women (23%). Additionally, Hispanic Americans (74%) are significantly more likely than their white counterparts (65%) to feel the need to modify their appearance before taking part in job interviews.

“Job seekers may prefer to have the option to work remotely, but they still want to make their first impressions in person. Unfortunately, far too many (67%) feel the need to modify their normal appearance in some way prior to a job interview,” said Richard Wahlquist, ASA president and chief executive officer. “To attract the best talent and create more inclusive workplaces, employers need to send a clear message to candidates that they are hiring based on skills and not physical appearance or dress codes from another era.”

Report: Women’s Representation in Staffing Leadership Grew in 2022

The percentage of women who serve as chief executive officers and owners in the staffing industry more than doubled from 2020 to 2022, according to a new survey released by the Women Business Collaborative with support from ASA, National Association of Personnel Services, Staffing Industry Analysts, and TechServe Alliance. The percentage of female CEOs and owners in the staffing industry reached 42% in 2022, up from less than 20% in 2020.

“Women’s voices continue to grow in the staffing industry, but we still have work to do to reach full gender parity,” said ASA chair Threase Baker.
