How Do Job Candidates Feel About Their Prospects for the Year Ahead?

Eight in 10 job candidates (80%), both active and passive seekers, foresee working for a new company in the next 12 months—despite, or possibly due to, the economic uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic in the U.S.—according to the 2020 Candidate Sentiment Study by ASA and its corporate research partner, ClearlyRated. The data from the survey, among other results, reveal a sense of optimism about employment and job-related opportunities as the nation continues to fight Covid-19.

The 2020 Candidate Sentiment Study also sheds light on candidates’ perceptions regarding how they look for jobs (online vs. offline resources), the reasons why they decide to leave a job, and their experiences partnering with staffing agencies―with distinct differences reported among generations, industry sectors, races/ethnicities, and genders. A report of the survey findings is available for purchase—get more information at americanstaffing.net/candidate-sentiment-study.

Give the Gift of Opportunity for the Future Workforce

This year, the ASA Foundation is again supporting fundraising efforts for its philanthropic partner, Jobs for America’s Graduates—specifically, to provide scholarships for the JAG National Student Leadership Academy.

Each year, the academy program hosts 800 student delegates from across the nation to participate in three days of professional and personal development activities. By contributing to the ASA Foundation JAG scholar fund, you can help a high school student take part in this life-changing experience that will help shape their professional future in the workforce.

Give to the ASA Foundation JAG scholar fund before the year ends—and help spread the word on social media using the hashtag #ASACares.

ASA Staffing Index: Staffing Jobs Hit 2020 High in December

Staffing employment for the week of Dec. 7–13 edged up 0.4% from the prior week, according to the ASA Staffing Index. This week marks a 2020 high for staffing jobs, with the index reaching an unrounded value of 91 for the first time this year. It also was the narrowest year-to-year gap so far in 2020, with staffing jobs down just 5.6% from the same week last year.

New starts were down (-5.8% on average), with less than half (42%) of staffing companies reporting gains in new assignments week-to-week.

“While new assignments (an indication of job orders) are down, staffing employment continues to grow steadily—reaching a level not seen in the past year, which shows promise for the recovery of temporary jobs,” said Cynthia Davidson, ASA senior director of research.

This week, containing the 12th day of the month, will be used in the December monthly employment situation report scheduled to be issued by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Jan. 8.
