TrueBlue News Release (06/12/13)

TrueBlue Inc. has acquired the assets of Crowley Transportation Services, a temporary driver staffing company serving New England. “We’re excited about the growth prospects for truck drivers and the opportunity to expand to this new geographic market,” says TrueBlue chief executive officer Steve Cooper. He says he sees more acquisitions in the company’s future. “We are optimistic about the growth of the temporary staffing market, and with our strong balance sheet we are in the market to acquire other quality companies that add to the range of services we can provide our customers,” Cooper says.

Jobless Claims in U.S. Fell by 12,000 Last Week to 334,000

Bloomberg (06/13/13) Jeanna Smialek

Jobless claims declined by 12,000 to 334,000 in the week ended June 8 from 346,000 a week earlier, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg predicted jobless claims of 346,000. Fewer layoffs mean companies have cut staff about as much as they can, which means companies may add to staff if sales improve in the second half of the year.

“The downside risk from sequestration is proving much smaller than some had feared,” says Mike Englund, chief economist at Action Economics LLC in Boulder, CO. “Just like we dodged the bullet with the payroll tax increase earlier in the year, we seem to have dodged the bullet with sequestration.”

Wal-Mart’s Everyday Hiring Strategy: Add More Temporary Workers

Reuters (06/13/13) Dhanya Skariachan; Jessica Wohl

In recent months, of 52 U.S. Wal-Mart stores surveyed, 27 have only hired temporary workers, 20 hired a combination of temporary and regular full- and part-time workers, and five did not hire. Fewer than 10% of Wal-Mart’s employees are temporary. Wal-Mart’s temporary workers are paid the same starting wage as other workers. The trend may be calculated to save labor costs, because Wal-Mart is experiencing tight margins, and it may also help Wal-Mart deal with the implications of the Affordable Care Act.

Wal-Mart’s employee levels have remained more or less stable since 2009. Temporary workers often are hired on 180-day contracts, and must reapply for work when their contract expires.

Add Value to Your Client Relationships and Increase Loyalty

Giving superior customer service can increase loyalty and client retention rates. One way to provide that extra-special service to your staffing firm’s clients is to be prepared and well-versed in employment and labor law. By helping clients understand their co-employment obligations and responsibilities, you might help them avoid legal missteps that could result in costly legal proceedings—demonstrating your commitment to them and solidifying your business relationship.

The Certified Staffing Professional®, Technical Services CertifiedSM, and Certified Search ConsultantSM credentials can enhance your competency in and knowledge of labor and employment law. The facts you’ll learn as you work through these certification programs can help protect you and your clients from making potentially costly mistakes.

To learn more, listen to a recording of the recent ASAPro webinar Gain a Competitive Advantage With ASA Certification on ASA Central—it’s free for ASA members.
