Staffing World Attendees Optimistic About Revenue Growth
In an anonymous instant poll conducted at the ASA annual convention and expo, which took place this week in Orlando, 83% of Staffing World attendees said they are expecting at least a 5% growth in revenue this year. A majority of firms said they’re concerned about recruiting qualified talent in the year ahead.
In Tuesday’s opening general session, Staffing World attendees were asked “What is your top concern about the year ahead?” Of the 313 total respondents, 39% of attendees cited “recruiting qualified talent” as their top concern, with “generating revenues” and “improving gross margins” tied as the next most-popular response.
In Wednesday’s general session, attendees were asked “What are you projecting for 2013 revenues?” Of 300 respondents, 42% answered “up 5–10%,” and 41% answered “up more than 10%.”
Volt Information Sciences Reports Update on Business Performance During the Fiscal Third Quarter

Volt Information Sciences Inc. reported revenue of $460 million for its staffing services segment—which accounts for most of the company’s revenue—in its 2013 fiscal third quarter, down 9.6% from $509 million in the fiscal third quarter of 2012. Net revenue for the segment was $454 million, down 10.7% from $508 million. The company also reported a loss in the fiscal third quarter in its telecommunications services segment.
Commentary: Obamacare and the Part-Time Economy

Andrew Puzder, chief executive officer of CKE Restaurants, scoffs at the Obama administration’s claim that Obamacare’s definition of full-time employment as 30 or more hours per week has no effect on employers’ hiring practices. “To understand Obamacare’s impact on part-time employment, consider the six-month period between the employer mandate’s initial ‘look back’ date of Jan. 1 and July 2, 2013,” says Puzder, noting that “this is the period during which employers most significantly increased part-time employment in reaction to Obamacare.” During this period, the economy added 833,000 part-time jobs and lost 97,000 full-time jobs, for net creation of 736,000 jobs. “In reality, the economy overall added no full-time jobs. Rather, it lost them,” he states.
Puzder says the bipartisan “Forty Hours Is Full Time Act” introduced in the House and Senate earlier this year offers a viable solution. The bill redefines a full-time employee as one who works 40 hours a week or 174 hours a month based on a 52-week year. “That change to Obamacare would encourage economic growth and job creation,” he concludes.
