Unanimous Decision: Amazon Staffing Firm Wins Big in High Court

Wall Street Journal (12/09/14) Brent Kendall

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled unanimously that Amazon warehouse workers do not have to be compensated for time spent undergoing security checks after their shifts. The warehouse workers had accused Integrity Staffing Solutions of violating the Fair Labor Standards Act by failing to pay them for the security screenings, which were intended to prevent employee theft.

The court determined that the security screenings are noncompensable postliminary activities that are not the principal activities the employees were hired to perform, nor are they “integral and indispensable” to the employees’ duties. Justice Clarence Thomas wrote that “Integrity Staffing could have eliminated the screenings altogether without impairing the employees’ ability to complete their work.”

National Economy Out of the Doldrums; Unemployment Continues to Decline

Business Wire (12/10/2014)

The U.S. economy is expected to expand at a 3.0% pace over the next two years due to low oil prices, higher wages, increased consumer spending, and a falling unemployment rate, according to UCLA Anderson Forecast’s fourth quarterly release. Years of weak growth rates are expected to make way for a sustained period of 3.0% real gross domestic product growth. Experts forecast that the economy will create between 200,000 and 260,000 jobs every month and that the unemployment rate will fall to 5.0% within the next two years.

“Specifically, we are forecasting 2.8% growth in the current quarter and anticipate growth to average 3.1% in both 2015 and 2016,” says senior economist David Shulman, author of the national forecast.

Washington Times (12/09/14) David R. Sands

Experts anticipate growing payrolls, solid growth, and continued low inflation for the upcoming year, according to an annual survey from the Association for Financial Professionals Inc. As the economic recovery solidifies, hiring and wages also are expected to rise.

“We have been tracking cash accumulation, which slowed this year as companies began to invest in the future,” says AFP president and chief executive officer Jim Kaitz. “Now the big news is that almost half of companies plan to expand payrolls in 2015.”
