Staffing employment for the week of Dec. 8–14 rose to 107.54, according to the ASA Staffing Index—the highest value since the index’s inception in June 2006. Temporary and contract staffing employment increased 0.40% from the prior week and was 4.18% higher than the same week last year.
That same week also will be used in the December monthly employment situation report, which will be issued by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on Jan. 9.

AMN Healthcare Services News Release (12/22/14)
Health care workforce solutions provider AMN Healthcare Services has acquired Omaha, NE-based Avantas, a provider of clinical labor management services. The purchase price includes an initial payment of $16.5 million, with an earn-out potential of up to $8.5 million based on future operating performance.
TeamHealth Holdings News Release (12/22/14)
Physicians staffing solutions provider TeamHealth Holdings Inc. has acquired Washington, DC-based Certified Anesthesia Services. CAS’ more than 40 physicians and certified registered nurse anesthetists manage approximately 28,000 cases annually.

The economy grew at a seasonally adjusted annual pace of 5.0% in the third quarter, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce, up from 4.6% in the second quarter and the strongest pace since the third quarter of 2003. The agency previously had estimated third-quarter GDP growth at 3.9%, and economists polled by the Wall Street Journal had forecast a smaller upward revision of 4.3% growth.
The economy has seen strong growth since the spring, following a fleeting GDP contraction in the first quarter. Meanwhile, hiring this year was its most robust since 1999.
