New ASA Legal Line Video for Members: IRS Defers Employee Payroll Taxes

PREMISE. QUESTION? The ASA Legal Line monthly video series features a member of the association’s legal team and addresses critical legal, regulatory, and legislative topics that have direct implications for your business.

In the latest installment, ASA senior vice president, chief legal and operating officer Stephen Dwyer discusses [TOPIC].

Watch the update and join the conversation on ASA Central.
In this month’s installment of Legal Line, ASA senior counsel, Ed Lenz, discusses the recent Internal Revenue Service guidance allowing employers to defer their employees’ share of Social Security taxes through the end of the year. Lenz points out that most employers are electing not to defer out of concern that they will be liable to pay the tax if employees are no longer working next year when the taxes must be paid—a particular concern of staffing firms because of their high employee turnover.

Join OSHA in National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction

Fatalities caused by falls from elevation continue to be a leading cause of death for construction employees, accounting for 320 of the 1,008 construction fatalities recorded in 2018 (according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Those deaths were preventable. The National Safety Stand-Down raises fall hazard awareness across the country in an effort to stop fall fatalities and injuries. The 2020 National Safety Stand-Down takes place Sept. 14–18. Job sites across the country and internationally pause work so that employers and workers can talk about fall prevention and commit to on-the-job safety.

Participation is not limited to the construction industry, and no business is too small to participate. In previous years, many nonconstruction employers held stand-downs. For more information on the stand-down, visit osha.gov/stopfallsstanddown.
