ASA Staffing Index: Staffing Employment Grows After Holiday

Staffing employment grew in the week of Sept. 12–18, rising 1.4% to a rounded value of 106 and setting a new record high for the month of September. Several staffing companies mentioned a recent holiday as a barrier preventing further growth. Staffing jobs were up 5.6% from the same week last year.

New starts bounced back in the 37th week of the year after a sharp holiday-driven decline, rising 8.8% from the prior week. More than four in 10 staffing companies (45%) reported gains in new assignments week-to-week.

The ASA Staffing Index four-week moving average edged down from the prior week but held at a rounded value of 106, as temporary and contract staffing employment for the four weeks ending Sept. 18 was 7.6% higher than the same period in 2021.

“Staffing employment remains strong despite a holiday dip in September,” said Tim Hulley, ASA assistant director of research.

This week, containing the 12th day of the month, will be used in the September monthly employment situation report scheduled to be issued by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Oct. 7.

Learn How to Hire an Inclusive Workforce at Staffing World 2022

Staffing World delivers the most comprehensive, diverse, and engaging learning opportunities in the staffing, recruiting, and workforce solutions industry. The convention, which takes place Oct. 25–27 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, features world-renowned keynote speakers and carefully selected learning sessions, including “Cultivating an Organizational Culture of Inclusion Through Empathy and Innovation.”

In the ever-evolving talent landscape, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEI&B) strategies are paramount to meeting business needs and capitalizing on the competitive advantages of DEI&B. In this interactive session, you will learn from the subject-matter experts at Rangam on why empathy, innovation, and technology are fundamental components of DEI&B strategy—most importantly as they pertain to attracting and retaining autistic, neurodivergent, and disabled talent. Learn how these philosophies cultivate an environment that more effectively harnesses the true talents and natural abilities of employees by embracing the authentic self and “screening in” instead of “screening out” candidates. This approach to DEI&B allows the organization and individual to truly thrive. Rangam will share how its holistic workforce solutions guide has helped its clients meet their talent needs. Attendees should prepare to participate in activities designed to apply knowledge gained during the session.
