ASA honored three staffing agencies with 2022 Elevate Awards, the organization announced today, for workforce development programs that promote equity in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers and registered apprenticeships for transitioning service members, veterans, and their families.

Created in 2018, the Elevate Awards celebrate the staffing industry’s most innovative and effective workforce development programs for temporary and contract employees. Award classes are determined by company revenue.

“Staffing companies have a front-row seat to the pressing needs of businesses who are unable to source qualified labor as a result of the growing skills gap crisis within the labor market,” said Richard Wahlquist, president and chief executive officer of ASA. “Our Elevate Awards winners have developed innovative, dynamic, and multifaceted job training, retraining, and upskilling programs that are opening doors for workers across the country.”

Staffing employment grew in the week of Sept. 12–18, rising 1.4% to a rounded value of 106 and setting a new record high for the month of September. Several staffing companies mentioned a recent holiday as a barrier preventing further growth. Staffing jobs were up 5.6% from the same week last year.

New starts bounced back in the 37th week of the year after a sharp holiday-driven decline, rising 8.8% from the prior week. More than four in 10 staffing companies (45%) reported gains in new assignments week-to-week.

The ASA Staffing Index four-week moving average edged down from the prior week but held at a rounded value of 106, as temporary and contract staffing employment for the four weeks ending Sept. 18 was 7.6% higher than the same period in 2021.

“Staffing employment remains strong despite a holiday dip in September,” said Tim Hulley, ASA assistant director of research.

This week, containing the 12th day of the month, will be used in the September monthly employment situation report scheduled to be issued by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Oct. 7.

ASA has named DeLibra Wesley, president and chief executive officer of Dallas-based National Recruiting Consultants, the 2023 Volunteer of the Year. The Volunteer of the Year award is selected through nominations from volunteer peers from across the country.

As the leader of a woman- and minority-owned business, Wesley is a leading advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace. In addition to serving on the ASA board of directors, she also serves as vice chairman of the inclusion, diversity, and equity advocacy (IDEA) group council and is a member of the ASA women in leadership interest group council, as well as the ASA Texas Network council. In addition, Wesley has completed two cycles as a mentor in the ASA Mentor Match program and has participated as a facilitator and panelist at ASA events. She is a sought-out diversity, equity, and inclusion subject matter expert.
