ASA Data: Staffing Jobs Continue Growth Trend in 1Q

U.S. staffing companies employed an average of 2.86 million temporary and contract workers per day in the first quarter of 2013, up 2.9% from the same period last year, according to new data from the ASA Quarterly Employment and Sales Survey. The January through March period marked 13 consecutive quarters of year-to-year staffing job growth since the recession ended in 2009.

“Temporary and contract employment is a good indicator of where the economy is today,” says Richard Wahlquist, ASA president and chief executive officer. “Most staffing firms expect to see slow but steady growth in the months ahead.”

Weak Signs For U.S. Output

U.S. factories in May reported their worst results since the end of the recession. The Institute for Supply Management’s broad index slipped to 49 in April from 50.7 the previous month—the first such decline since November and the lowest reading since the recession ended in June 2009. Any reading below 50 indicates contraction, say ISM officials. Brad Holcomb, chairman of ISM’s manufacturing survey panel, says the decline in new orders is especially worrisome. “I don’t recall the last time” more sectors saw declines in new orders than growth, he says. The ISM report also indicated broad-based weakness, including stagnant employment.
